Bird counting: An ingenius method of protecting the environment

Did you know that individuals with even a meager interest in birds can participate in activities like bird counting?

If not, then this post is for you! If this is the first time you are hearing about bird counting, then this post is also for you!

Bird counting is the activity of observing, identifying and listing birds in a habitat¹; can vary from urban buildings to a pond in a sanctuary because, as we all know, birds are everywhere. I am not just talking about those pigeons waiting outside your window panes to build a nest inside your house, instead I am trying to motivate you to look beyond those who show up at your window pane. For exampls, watch the small, brown feathered Bulbul, or the Indian Scops Owl near The Ridge in North Campus, Delhi University² or, if you find yourself fortunate, near a park in your neighborhood.

Around the world, in order to ignite the passion of bird watching among citizens, a number of events/activities have been formed to ensure the same, of which the Great Backyard Bird Count is the most famous. This event is organised each February for a period of four days where the individuals, using digital tools, observe, identify and list birds either to relax or to compete as a challenge. Last year, according to The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC 2020) summary report, India recorded the second highest spot for bird counting checklist, with the highest number coming from the state of Tamil Nadu³.

Similarly, FES (Foundation for Ecological Security), an NGO based in Anand, by collaborating in local committees in different states has been participating in Bird Counting for a long time.  For Bird Counting Week 2021, FES collaborated with Rashmi Devishankar Sukhwal Pasture Development Committee Dindoli, and a program was organized under the chairmanship of former Sarpanch and present Zilla Parishad member representative Nandram Bhil at Dindoli pond⁴.

Information regarding the species of birds in nature and their utility, place and importance and their connection and development with Shamlat resources was disseminated during the program inauguration by Sanwarlal Jat, the district coordinator of the organization. The villagers and FES block instructors of the organization including Rajendra Singh Chundawat from Bhupalsagar, Ratan Lal Mali, Puja Sharma, Devendra Tripathi from Kapasan etc participated and counted the birds.

After an enthralling week, according to the local language, the villagers in Dindoli village, Rajasthan found about 620 birds of 16 species such as Garat, Water Kagli, Hans, Black bird, Sohan bird, Tithari, Duck, Heron, Dek, Hawk, Parrot, Pigeon, Bird, Harsada!

Such bird counting events are not just useful for villagers to understand and adapt to their village surroundings, but also a unique way to protect the bird species and the environment. Perhaps, the positive consequences of such an event will build a positive environment for birds, bird watchers in not just rural areas but urban residences as well.

So from next time, remember the words BIRD COUNTING WEEK and witness the fascination of  watching and recording the different species of birds in your area!

Illegal mining on gauchar land

The mining mafia, who are spreading their feet in the panchayat Bhupalsagar of the subdivision area, has now brought crime to the fore for illegal mining by encroaching on Gauchar land under the guise of lease. Villagers upset by such an incident sent a complaint to the panchayat in writing and appealed to the gram panchayat to remove all the encroachments from the gaucharland.

Taking immediate action on the report received by the villagers, the gram panchayat has submitted a memorandum to the sub-divisional officer Sukhram. In the report given by the villagers to the gram panchayat, they wrote that illegal encroachment and illegal mining is being done by trespassers and mining mafia in Bhupalsagar panchayat area, due to which there is no space left for food for cows and other cattle.

The villagers have put debris and stones on the pasture land by SK Mines, which has caused inconvenience to the animals. Villagers urged the gram panchayat to immediately remove whoever has encroached in Bhupalsagar gram panchayat encroachment and make suitable safety action on pasture land for report on fodder or cattle. Here, the gram panchayat has also done the sub-divisional work on the report of the villagers to the officers on the gram panchayat for all the gaucher land of lake Bhupalsagar.

More than 2 thousand plants in village called Kalyanpura in Begu area!

Villagers of the Kalyanpura village of Begu area understood the importance of trees 4 years ago. As a result, they have planted more than 2 thousand fruit-bearing flowers at Panchphal sports ground, Mokshadham, community hall and public places. They have kept the plants alive by taking good care, so that the environment of the village remains pure, oxygen is available and the birds can live on the trees.

"Village should be identified with Green Kalyanpura", said Ashok Kumar Dhakad, son of former sarpanch with environmental lover resident of Kalyanpura. Kalyanpura turned green with the passion of a team of 50 people. The small initiative of the villagers of Kalyanpura regarding environmental protection is nothing less than an inspiration.

All the villagers keep the plants alive and fulfill the responsibility of taking care of them, so that the village becomes beautiful. In summer, this team irrigates the plants by planting tankers. In Dhamancha Gram Panchayat, Gunpura, water is given to the plants by tanker. According to Wardpanch Santosh Devo Dhakad, MNREGA also inspires the workers towards environmental protection by planting saplings.

In Kalyanpura village, a team of 50 people worked hard on about 2 thousand plants, then in four years these plants started taking the form of trees. Green Kalyanpura, a social media group created by some villagers 4 years ago, cherished the dream of getting recognition. With this, many villagers were added such as Jamnalal Dhakad, Hemant, Kamlesh, Banwari, Anil Sudhar, Prahlad, Bharat, Sanjay Shambhulal Dhakad, Gotu Singh etc.

About 50 villagers joined the team and planted 1000 neem, 600 gooseberry in 70 bigha and 180 saplings in Mokshadham. Four years ago, under MGNREGA Panchaphal scheme in Kalyanpura village, 1000 neem, 600 gooseberry plants were planted on 70 bigha land with the help of this team. Planted 108 saplings of Neem, Peepal, Banyan, Kachnar, Gudel etc. in Mokshadham. 120 saplings of Neem, Gulmohar were planted in Kalyanpura Model Sports Ground. 34 saplings of Jamun etc. were planted in the community hall.

The transformation FES wishes to see: A photo gallery

Jashma, district Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

This picture shows the workers, mainly women, at the forefront of the training session on re vegetation given by FES  trainers at Jashma village. Revegetation is the process of revamping the soil for better production of plants and trees in that area. It can be done by natural processes or by manual projects. The one depicted in the above picture shows manual revegetation work.

Choona Khera, Rajasthan

This picture shows the villagers, both men and women, take a pledge to protect the pasture lands and cattle at Choona Khera. The reason for this pledge is not simply about afforestation, but on taking essential steps to prevent the kind of scarring that can damage an entire ecosystem. The healthy practices that are promoted via pledge taking are- solving the problem of cattle over-grazing, protecting pasture lands from encroachment, identifying invasive species of plants from non-invasive ones etc.

Satkhanda, Rajasthan

This picture shows the seed sowing session conducted by the trainers at Satkhanda. Seed sowing is an essential practice without which fundamentals of planting will remain unclear. According to one news report, there are four points which must be emphasised while practicing seed sowing- location, time, species and method. In this picture too, the villagers learn these four points while pragmatically handling the process of seed sowing.

Harisinghji ka Khera Kala, Rajasthan

This picture shows the training session by a trainer on re vegetation and seed sowing. Mobilizing and making the general public aware of the problems, solutions and development strategies are important ways in which we empower the villagers, in this case, it might be women. The picture shown above depicts one of the many training sessions that are organized by FES trainers and panchayats.

Semliya, Barbal, Rajasthan

This picture shows the villagers in a meeting for chargah vikas. Various chargah vikas samitis have been constructed, formulated in paperwork, even written about on the newspapers. But none of them actually show us the view of what brews inside these chargah vikas samiti meetings. We can listen to the picture speak to us as the villagers (men) participate in meetings for development projects of their area.

Hopefully the hard work put in by such a variety of workers will sprout in the form of new trees and plants:)
